DARKROOM PROCESSES

LIQUID LIGHT EMULSION

Use Liquid Light® photographic emulsion for prints on wood, glass, ceramics, plastics, china, fabric, metal, rock, paper, artist's canvas, walls-- even an egg!

Printing with Liquid Light is the same as with black-and-white enlargement paper. Under amber or red safelight, brush the emulsion onto a surface. Expose with an enlarger or slide projector. Process with standard paper developer and fixer.

Prints are archivally-permanent with a full range of tones and transparent highlights that reveal the color and texture of the material underneath. Contrast is medium-high (about #3).

Coverage is approximately 1.5 square feet per ounce. No fumes, odors or VOC's-- Liquid Light is completely darkroom-safe (see features). Have questions about setting up a darkroom? See FAQ page.

EXTRA-SENSITIVITY EMULSION

Ag-Plus® photographic emulsion has extra silver-halide content, making it especially fit for use in-camera,as for tintypes or ambrotypes,or for making oversize prints at a considerable distance from the enlarger. Processing and final appearance of prints made with Ag-Plus are the same as Liquid Light. More
features.

PYROFOTO© FOR CERAMICS

Use Pyrofoto to print and kiln-fire photographs, drawings and computer scans onto ceramics and glass. No darkroom or special equipment is needed-- only a bright bulb or direct sunlight for exposure.

Mix Pyrofoto sensitizer with any liquid glaze (bought separately) or dry powder glaze, then expose through an inkjet or laser transparency. Safe to use (contains trace amounts of dichromate which are eliminated during processing.)

SELECTACOLOR© FOR PRINTS

Description:

SelectaColor© produces brilliant color prints on wood, metal, plastics, paper and most other materials. No darkroom or special equipment is needed, use sunlight or a bulb for exposure.

Images consist of solid pigments not fugitive dyes, so prints are permanent. Colors can be blended together for intermediate hues, hand-applied separately in the same print or applied in sequence for multicolor prints.

The process consists of just three steps performed under diffuse room light: brush on sensitizer, expose through a transparency and develop with water to reveal the brilliant positive image.

Uses of SelectaColor:

  • Color prints on glass, metal, wood, paper and other materials.

  • Labels, nameplates and placques on metal and wood.

  • Quick-color proofs for standard printing processes.

  • Four-Color Kit includes 4oz.(120cc's)
each of black, red, yellow and blue $38.00.

    Single Colors:

    Half Pint (240 cc's) $20.00

    Quart (960 cc's) $60.00

    TINTYPES

    TINTYPE PARLOR

Our Tintype Parlor is an authentic re-creation of the tintype process, a type of "instant" photography that was popular in your great-grandparent's day. These are authentic dry-plate tintypes, also known as ferrotypes, like those found in antique shops, not modern imitations. Plates are thin enough to cut with scissors to fit inside any camera. The kit contains everything you need to make tintypes (or ambrotypes if coated on glass.) Tintype materials can also be ordered in bulk quantites for economical use in old-time photo parlors.

New larger size Tintype Parlor kit now contains eight 4"x5" metal plates, extra AG-Plus emulsion for coating, tintype developer and fixer with complete instructions for use. $35.00

    BULK TINTYPES

Bulk Kit contains 35 4"x5" plates or 10 8"x10" plates
plus 8 oz. AG-Plus emulsion, tintype developer concentrate (makes 1 gallon) and fixer with complete instructions.

Tintype Plates Contains 10 plates ready for coating.

    Emulsion for Tintypes (AG-Plus)

    Tintype Developer
Reversal developer, Makes 1 gallon $28.00

    Tintype Fixer
Kodak Fixer, Makes 1 gallon $7.50

    PHOTOGRAPHIC TONERS

    POLYTONER©

Polytoner tones B&W prints any color, using color-coupling chemistry: It tones the black image without affecting the highlights. (Effect: A black tree against a white sky, toned with green Polytoner: The sky stays white, the tree becomes green.) Use it with black & white photographic papers and Liquid Light prints. Contains red, yellow and blue couplers that can be blended for secondary colors.

    Tones 40 8x10" prints $35.00

    PRINTINT©

Make pastel papers with Printint, that tints black&white prints any color you choose. (Effect: A black tree against a white sky, tinted in yellow Printint solution: The sky becomes yellow, the tree stays black.) Also use Printint for spot-retouching and hand-coloring of black & white prints,or with Halo-Chrome for silver-on-color prints. Contains primary color concentrates that can be blended.

    Tints 40 8X10 inch prints $30.00

    HALO-CHROME ©

Halo-Chrome transforms black-and-white prints into pure metallic silver. (Effect: A black tree framed against a white sky, toned with Halo-Chrome: The tree becomes solid silver while the sky remains white.) Used along with Printint, it gives silver-on-color.

Halo-Chrome can also be used to produce a black image against a silver background. (Effect: A black tree against a white sky is toned with Halo-Chrome: The sky becomes solid silver while the tree remains black.) On glossy papers, Halo-Chrome gives a mirror-finish and on matte papers a brushed-silver finish.

The half-pint size tones 40 8x10 inch prints.

    CLASSIC SENSITIZERS

    FA-1 SENSITIZER

An all-in-one alternative sensitizer, FA-1 gives warm black images on paper and cloth. On paper, it can be used for a variety of classical processes including van Dykes (also called brownprints) and kallitypes (that resemble platinum prints.)
On t-shirts, it gives a permanent image that does not stiffen the cloth. FA-1 is handled under room light, and requires a negative transparency. No darkroom or special equipment is necessary, only sunlight or a bulb is needed for exposure.

    Makes one quart $35.00

    BLUEPRINTS

    All you need is sunlight.

As the name implies, Blueprints are a rich cyan blue, so are also named Cyanotypes. A transparency or drawing on clear plastic is laid over paper or cloth coated with blueprint solution. Sunlight (or a halogen bulb) exposes it, and running water is all that's needed to make it permanent.

    Makes 24 8x10's. $30.00

    PHOTO-SILKSCREENS

    PRINTSCREEN©

Rockland PrintScreen emulsion is the best way to make photo silkscreens without special equipment. No darkroom or special equipment is needed-- you can use a high-intensity bulb for exposure. Just squeegee some emulsion onto a stretched silk or synthetic screen, expose through a line transparency and wash out the screen by running water to make a durable photographic stencil that resists both water and solvent-based inks.

    DIGITAL IMAGING

    INKJET TRANSFER PAPERS

There are two types of transfer papers, dry for absorbent materials and wet for non-absorbent materials. Since most inkjet inks are transparent, these papers work best on light-colored materials.

    Dry for absorbent surfaces:

The image is printed on an inkjet printer then transferred by pressing the paper onto fabric or other surfaces with a household iron. The paper then is peeled away and discarded. The fabric is slightly stiffened but can be comfortably worn, and washed by hand.

    Clear, 10 8.5x11" sheets $13.00

    Wet for non-absorbent surfaces:

The image is printed on an inkjet printer and the paper is sprayed or painted with lacquer or other clear coating (you supply). It is transferred by soaking the paper in water and floating the image onto glass, metal, plastic, etc.

    Clear, 10 8.5x11" sheets $14.50

    TRANSPARENCY FILM

Room-light processes require a full-size transparency. The simplest method is to make one with an injket printer or laser copier. Start with any kind of original-- a black & white print, color print, color slide, book illustration, etc. Scan or photo-copy it, and print with black ink onto transparency film using the "best" setting. In use, the film is held in contact with the sensitized surface while exposing with a bright light such as a high power halogen bulb.
(Alternate methods: You can take the artwork to any office supply store like Kinko's and order a black & white transparency. Or you can make a transparency photographically by traditional darkroom methods.)

Set of 10 sheets transparency film, size 8 1/2x11 inches:

    WEATHERPROOF PAPER

Bright white plastic-impregnated paper for use in all conditions-- indoors, outdoors, marine and in the field. Widely used for map-making, it is printable with both inkjet and laser printers. (Its limited absorbency also makes it an excellent base for printing with SelectaColor.) Contains 10 8 1/2 by 11" sheets.
    $11.00
